I write my young adult novels in first person, present tense. Present tense because it makes the story more immediate (it is happening right now) and first person because, again, it focuses the story. Using first person (I saw this etc instead of he/she) means only what the main character experiences is in the book so it is just Brooklyn’s story. We see other characters through her eyes and events have only her interpretation. It makes is a more personal story, definitely more of a rush.
